Dalcroze Institute
The Evening Division's 14th annual Dalcroze Institute will be held July 28 - August 15, 2008. This intensive summer workshop is conducted by Robert M. Abramson, a distinguished member of the Juilliard faculty and a leading authority on the methods and literature of Emile Jaques-Dalcroze.
What is Dalcroze?
Emile Jaques-Dalcroze believed that the core of all musical art is human emotion. He taught that it is not enough to train just the mind or the ear or the voice. Instead, the entire human body must be trained since the body contains all of the essentials for the development of sensibility and analysis of sound, music and feeling. Through participation in simple games, exercises, and improvisations, the students learn to combine music and movement in order to develop rhythmic unity between the eye, ear, mind, and body. Refining one's sense of musical rhythm provides a clear outward expression of inner knowledge and feeling. This ability enhances not only a person's performance, but also each and every person's life, as a creative and effective form of communication.
Who benefits from Dalcroze?
- Any person who enjoys music and wishes to see, feel, and experience how it works.
- Dancers, actors, musicians—any performer for whom the power of rhythm is essential.
- Music teachers, therapists, and classroom teachers who wish to learn the useful ideas and techniques of Dalcroze Eurhythmics.
- Teachers working toward obtaining the Dalcroze Elementary Certificate or License.

Improvisation, expressive movements techniques, teaching styles, presentation skills, solfège, and lesson and curriculum design are stressed. Children's classes are taught by qualified Certificate candidates, followed by evaluation and discussion. The mornings will begin with movement classes taught by Ms. Belilove and Mr. Williamson, then later the class will break into smaller groups for practice teaching and Dalcroze work in specialized subjects. Mr. Abramson will teach a performance master class each week. During week three, Certificate and License candidates must fulfill the exam and evaluation requirements. Joe Williams
Joe Williams is considered the world's leading expert in the movement training of Francois Delsarte (1811-1871), whose studies in both expressive movement and music analysis were known to have strongly influenced the work of Dalcroze. The Delsarte System of Expression, together with Dalcroze techniques, are known to have led the development of modern dance. (Early in her career Isadora Duncan was a Delsarte teacher, and both Dalcroze and Delsarte techniques were central training at the Denishawn dance school, which produced Martha Graham, Doris Humphrey, and Charles Weideman.) Mr. Williams has given master classes at Iowa State University, Wright State University, and Xavier University. He teaches Delsarte as teacher training faculty at the Cincinnati Yoga School and is on the regular faculty at Morocco and the Casbah Dance School in New York where, in the tradition of La Meri and Ruth St Denis, he teaches Delsarte to students of ethnic dance. He is the technique consultant for the first doctoral thesis on Delsarte's work to be written in France, Delsarte's homeland. In the fall of 2008, he will be presenting master classes at Adelphi University for their Ruth St Denis retrospective, honoring her founding there, seventy years ago, of the first dance department in America. Mr. Williams has taught for the Dalcroze Institute since 2005. More information about Mr.Williams and Delsarte is available at www.DelsarteProject.com.
