"Music of Count Basie" opens the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra 2009-2010 Season on Wednesday, October 7 at 8 PM in the School's Peter Jay Sharp Theater
The legendary William "Count" Basie is in the house Wednesday, October 7 at 8 PM when the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra opens its 2009-2010 season. Juilliard faculty member and alumnus Brandon Lee conducts the evening taking place in the School's Peter Jay Sharp Theater (155 West 65th Street). The program features some of Count Basie's signature pieces: Every Tub; Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie; Swinging the Blues; 9:20 Special; Tickle Toe; Jumpin' at the Woodside; Splanky; Moten Swing; Shiny Stockings; Freckle Face; To You; and Basie Straight Ahead. "Count" Basie (1904-1984) was a jazz pianist, organist, bandleader, and composer. He led his popular Count Basie Orchestra for close to 50 years.
FREE tickets have been distributed, but a standby line forms in the lobby of Juilliard at 7 PM on the night of the concert. For further information, call (212) 769-7406 or go to www.juilliard.edu.
Members of the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra are: Will Reardon-Anderson and Eddie Barbash (alto saxophones), Peter Reardon-Anderson and Lucas Pino (tenor saxophones); Adison Evans (baritone saxophone), Melissa Jean, Robert Edwards, Willie Applewhite, and Javier Nero (trombones), Steven Fowler, Mike Cottone, Matt Jodrell, and Kyle Athayde (trumpets); David Lantz (piano), Tom Guarna (guitar), Joshua Crumbly (bass), and Aaron Kimmel (drums).
As the youngest faculty member in Juilliard Jazz and an alumnus of the School's first entering class in 2001, Brandon Lee is committed to preserving the integrity of America's uniquely original art form, jazz. As a trumpeter, he has performed with a plethora of great jazz musicians: Benny Golson, Frank Wess, Clark Terry, Joe Wilder, Wynton Marsalis, Wycliffe Gordon, Hank Jones, Ray Brown, Eddie Henderson, Lewis Nash, and others. Though a consummate sideman, Mr. Lee has often performed as a leader in New York playing his original compositions and arrangements. He holds both a bachelor and master of music degree from the Juilliard Jazz program.
