Juilliard Jazz presents An Evening with Terence Blanchard: Jazz in Film on Monday, February 2, 2009 at 8 PM in Juilliard’s Peter Jay Sharp Theater (155 West 65th Street). Grammy award-winning trumpeter, bandleader, arranger, and film-score composer, Terence Blanchard, performs with the Juilliard Jazz Orchestra in his arrangements of film music by other composers from such classic films as The Man with the Golden Arm; The Pawnbroker; Degas’ Racing World; A Streetcar Named Desire; The Subterraneans; Love Theme from Chinatown; Anatomy of a Murder; and Taxi Driver. These themes are all featured on Mr. Blanchard’s 1999 Jazz in Film CD on the SONY label. The performing Juilliard Jazz Orchestra students will have the opportunity to work closely with Mr. Blanchard, who will be in residency at Juilliard the week prior to the concert.

Terence Blanchard has had an enormous impact on jazz and film; he has scored more than forty films and collaborated with filmmakers, including Leon Icasho, Ron Shelton, Kasi Lemmons, and Spike Lee. With Mr. Lee, he has composed scores for more than a dozen feature films and HBO documentaries, among them, When the Levees Broke (HBO), The Miracle at St. Anna, and Malcolm X. Mr. Blanchard was a featured musician on several of Mr. Lee’s films, including Mo’ Better Blues, Do the Right Thing, and School Daze.

In a recent phone interview for the Juilliard Journal, Juilliard’s newsletter, Mr. Blanchard discussed the creative process and how composing film scores varies according to the specific project. He commented: “There are some films where music plays an extremely prominent and dominant role in the storytelling process, while in other films, it can take a back seat and add a more atmospheric and ambient texture. Spike Lee uses music as another character in his films, so the music will always play a stronger role in his films than with other directors.” He continued: “While working on a film score for Lee, I am always brought into the process from the beginning. I read the script, get photos from the set, and see rushes of scenes after they have been shot. I am constantly in touch with Lee during the filming, discussing the size and scope of the score. Other directors wait until they have a more finished product.”

Born in New Orleans on March 13, 1962, Terence Blanchard began playing piano at 5 years of age. In elementary school, he added the trumpet and was coached at home by his opera-singing father. In high school, he came under the tutelage of Ellis Marsalis and Roger Dickerson, and after graduation, attended Rutger’s University on a music scholarship where one of his professors was so impressed by his talent that he brokered him a touring gig with Lionel Hampton’s band. In 1983, Wynton Marsalis recommended him as his replacement in Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Two years later, he and Donald Harrison split to form their own quintet. In 1990, Mr. Blanchard left to pursue a solo career. His soundtrack to Mo’ Better Blues and his CD, The Heart Speakers, were nominated for Grammy Awards. Signed to the SONY Classical label in 1999, the trumpeter/composer gained acclaim as a bandleader and composer of movie and television soundtracks (including the Grammy-nominated Wandering Moon and a Golden Globe nomination for his score for Spike Lee’s The 25th Hour). In 2003, Mr. Blanchard signed with Blue Note Records and has released Bounce and Flow, the first two parts of a three-record trilogy. Additional films that he has written the music for include Eve’s Bayou, Malcolm X, Barbershop, Their Eyes Were Watching God, and Clockers. Mr. Blanchard’s A Tale of God’s Will (A Requiem for Katrina), a beautifully haunting and impassioned song-cycle about the physical and emotional ravages upon the City of New Orleans and its residents as a result of Hurricane Katrina, was released in 2007 by Blue Note Records and won the 2008 Grammy Award for best large ensemble jazz CD. Terence Blanchard has been Artistic Director of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance since 2000.

Mr. Blanchard’s visit reunites him with Carl Allen, who is Artistic Director of Juilliard Jazz Studies. The two worked together in Mr. Blanchard’s first band, which he co-led with Donald Harrison. Their recording of the CD Jazz in Film features compositions by Duke Ellington, Bernard Herrmann (an alumnus of Juilliard), André Previn, Alex North, and Terence Blanchard, among others. Mr. Blanchard and Mr. Allen have played together on other projects as well.
