Juilliard Expansion and Renovation
In the years since its completion in 1969, Juilliard has outgrown its space. A major expansion and renovation of the facility has taken place via the opportunity afforded by Lincoln Center's 65th Street Redevelopment Project. Construction commenced in summer 2006 and is coming to its conclusion this fall 2009.
The project allows Juilliard to create approximately 38,000 square feet of additional space in and around Juilliard's current classroom building:
A new four-level wing above Alice Tully Hall's lobby, whose footprint is expanded to the property line between 65th and 66th streets, on Broadway, is designed by Diller, Scofidio + Renfro in collaboration with FX Fowle. JaffeHolden has been retained to do the acoustics. Juilliard's portion will include new and renovated teaching studios; classrooms; practice rooms; offices; a multi-use 2,000 square foot performance space for dance, drama, and opera (it will be Juilliard's 5th theater within the building); a state-of-the-art music technology center with two rehearsal rooms and a teaching/engineering studio that is connected to the multi-use theater for experimentation and performance; and a 1,100 square foot Writing and Communication Center, classroom, and a large tutoring and study area. A dance studio, with floor to ceiling glass frontage on Broadway, projects forward from the Juilliard building and makes dance activity visible to all.
Two open-air courtyards on the top floor of Juilliard have been enclosed and reclaimed for teaching studios and an acoustically calibrated 3,500 square foot orchestra rehearsal studio. Other interior spaces will be reconfigured to house a scholar's reading room and a climate-controlled and secure storage room dedicated to the Juilliard Manuscript Collection, and even a new faculty lounge.
Juilliard's entranceway - once separated on two levels that split traffic to the classrooms and the theaters - is reconfigured to street level, with a grand lobby and staircase, new box office facilities, and newly-organized suites for Admissions, the Evening Division, a student affairs suite, student lounge and multipurpose room, and ADA services.
In grateful recognition of leading donors to the Juilliard Second Century Fund, Juilliard has named a number of areas to be created or renovated as part of its redevelopment project. As of summer 2009, these include the Irene Diamond Building (comprising the new wing in its entirety), The Peter Jay Sharp Theater (formerly the Juilliard Theater), Stephanie P. McClelland Drama Theater, Rosemary and Meredith Willson Theater, Glorya Kaufman Dance Studio, Harold and Mimi Steinberg Drama Studio, June Noble Larkin Lobby, Morse Student Lounge, Janet and Leonard Kramer Box Office, and the Sidney R. Knafel Admissions Suite.
