Postcards From Juilliard Alums

Just after graduating, I was mentored by Sidra Bell for Peter Askim’s Next Festival of Emerging Artists and premiered a new work, Is this the edge?, with Akari Komura, a composer and friend. I continued my choreographic pursuits, presenting my solo work Meet me here for Moving Forward’s Emerging Artist Festival, which is co-run by Madison Hicks (BFA ’18, dance). In the fall, Rachel Lockhart (BFA ’23, dance) and I performed in a 30-minute improvisational score in a collaboration with the fashion houses Delfina Balda and Gray Matters for their Fantasies in Motion show.

Also in the fall, I had the honor of joining the Metropolitan Opera’s ballet corps and danced in Wagner’s Tannhäuser. At the same time, I began working with John Heginbotham (BFA ’93, dance) and Arnhold Creative Associate Joshua Roman as both a collaborator and a performer on Immunity, which premiered at Chelsea Factory as part of Juilliard’s residency there in February. Later this winter, I participated in the Guthman Musical Instrument Competition in Atlanta, presenting work by Kat Mustatea and Yonatan Rozin; dancing with Emily Pope; and witnessing how new music affects all art forms.

I’m thankful for my time at Juilliard and express my deepest gratitude to all those who keep connecting with me and helping me on my journey. My time since graduating has been vulnerable, triumphant, joyous, surprising, intricate, and vibrant. Every day I wake up with a newfound appreciation for and devotion to my craft.

Flora Ferguson (BFA '23, dance)
