Bass-Baritone Shen Yang

        23-year-old Bass-Baritone Shen Yang is completing his first year in Juilliard’s Artist Diploma program as a member of its Juilliard Opera Center, and has joined the esteemed Lindemann Young Artist Development Program at the Metropolitan Opera.  Rising to prominence as winner of the 2007 BBC competition known in the UK as the ‘Cardiff Singer of the World’, he most recently won a 2008 Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award.

        Born in Tianjin, Mr. Shen studied at Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and at Zhou Xiaoyan Opera Center in China, under the guidance of Professor Ping Gu. Among his previous first-place prizes are the Fifth Shanghai Inter¬na¬tional Opera Master Class in China; the Chamber Opera of Schloss Rheinsberg Opera Competition; the Verona L'Orfeo Singing Competition; and as Masetto in Don Giovanni at the International Opera Competition in Verona.

        His operatic roles include Masetto in Don Giovanni at Verona Philharmonic Theatre and Zhou Xiaoyan Inter¬national Opera Center in 2005, and Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte in France and Germany with Berliner Sibelius Orchestra in 2006. He has taken part in many concerts, including Modern Chamber Music Concerts at both the Eastern-Asia Music Festival in Korea, and at the Beijing Music Festival.

        In the last two years, he has made several recordings, including Super Bass and Winterreise (a Chinese premiere), which were released by FengLin Records Company.
