Building History—New Season Marks Momentous Events

| | The Bach Trio Sonatas, Open to Interpretation
by DAVID ENLOW Paul Jacobs, the chair of Juilliard’s organ department, is well known for his Bach interpretations, having performed all 200-plus of the composer’s organ works, sometimes in a single marathon concert. On September 15, Jacobs will open the Juilliard concert season with a recital of Bach’s Six Trio Sonatas, BWV 525-530. Referring to the significant challenge of performing these works, Jacobs compared the experience to walking on eggshells: “There isn’t much,” he said, “for the performer to cling on to.” More...

| The Nature of Learning
by LAURIE NILES For this year’s Starling-DeLay Symposium on Violin Studies, some 200 participants converged from 33 states and 17 countries to explore the nature of learning, teaching, and performing. The biennial symposium was held in May and included a master class by Paul Kantor, a workshop by performance psychologist Don Greene, a performance featuring violinist Chee-Yun Kim (right) and pianist Akira Eguchi, among several other events. In 1984, when the 36-year-old bassoonist and then dean of the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music applied for the job of president of the School with a cover letter proposing bold changes for Juilliard, he didn’t expect to be called back for an interview. | Bachauer Winners Take Risks, Reap Rewards
by BENJAMIN LAUDE Each May, Room 309 becomes a purgatory for anxious pianists who must perform before a panel of their teachers to demonstrate in 15 minutes what they have achieved in hundreds of hours of practice time. A lucky few are selected to return to Room 309 to vie for the top prize in Juilliard’s Gina Bachauer Piano Competition.
