Shakuhachi Performance
(Horizons)
Tori Yuuraku Murray-Brand, the manager of scholarship development at Juilliard, was trained in Western flute and began to study shakuhachi (Japanese bamboo flute) about eight years ago. She was recently awarded her Japanese name, Yuuraku, and the jun-shi-han license (to teach shakuhachi). She will perform and also talk about the history and the uniqueness of this instrument. Japanese roasted tea (houji-cha) will be served!

Scared Straight: The Theatrics of Lesbian Terrorism

The Liberal Arts Department presents Dr. Sara Warner, assistant professor of theater at Cornell University. In this talk, Professor Warner will examine the recent history of political theater as a form of lesbian activism, beginning in the 1960s with Valerie Solanas, author of the S.C.U.M. Manifesto, and the rise of Second Wave feminism, and concluding with more recent examples drawn from AIDS activism and the war on terror.
