Works Familiar and Unknown Enliven Some 700 Performances

Ashkenazy Probes 'Rach 3' at Juilliard

A special appearance by renowned pianist and conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy—the first occasion of its kind in the artist's long career—will shed light on Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3, one of the most technically demanding staples of the repertoire. An open rehearsal of the "Rach 3" will demonstrate how the orchestra and soloist collaborate in creating an interpretation, followed by a performance of the concerto with master’s student Hong Xu. Keyboard Talents Showcased in Annual Bachauer Recital

This year's Bachauer winners have much in common. Both started out as violinists, but got bitten by the piano bug early on. Both enjoy sports (he has a passion for golf, she for basketball and badminton). It's Childs' Play for the A.B.Q.

In a refreshingly inspired decision, the American Brass Quintet has commissioned a new composition from pianist-composer Billy Childs, and the result, 2 Elements, will receive its N.Y. premiere on October 3. A.B.Q. and Childs seem to be made for each other. Both have excelled in an astonishingly diverse range of musical situations, are virtuosos of the first order, have international followings—and most of all, are open to new and challenging musical experiences.
