Violinist Joel Smirnoff, a member of the Juilliard String Quartet since 1986 and its first violinist since 1997, has been named president of the Cleveland Institute of Music, replacing David Cerone who has retired from the position. Mr. Smirnoff's appointment was announced in April and is effective beginning July 1. At Juilliard, where he has also been a faculty member since 1986, Mr. Smirnoff will continue to teach and perform with the J.S.Q. throughout the transitional 2008-9 season.
